A few faves, film and digital, from recent adventures in second shooter-ing at Baldwin Hills Lookout in Los Angeles.
As I’m slowly coming up for air, I’m finally getting around to the second half of 2014. This was hands-down, one of my favorite weddings of all time. I spent the weekend up in great outdoors of Montana with my good friend/San Diego deserter, Jamie, and got to capture the awesomeness that is Faith and Bret. My favorite: when I would sort of look cautiously at a big bunch of beautiful weeds, and then back at Faith’s dress made of lace, and then she would immediately start walking into said weeds while saying, “Yeah, we’ll go in there”. The best.
Move it, move it.
Now that same-sex marriage is legal in 19 states + Washington D.C., I feel proud taking photos that represent a real step toward equality for friends, family members, and fellow humans, simply wanting the same basic rights as their straight counterparts. Rancho la Puerta is one of my favorite places on the planet, and I was recently invited to do a LGBT photo shoot around their ranch and organic farm. I should disclose that these two were not actually getting married and showed up to model specifically for the shoot, providing fun and entertainment the entire day. Also, they were willing to wear straw hats in a 100 degree dirt field, so there was that.
A while back I was invited to go to Tahoe to shoot Alex and Ryan’s wedding. These two are quite possibly the most entertaining pair of jokesters I’ve shot to date. 100% of the craziness that ensued was not prompted by me, which is kind of a photographer’s dream; just let me put my camera to my face and you go do your thing over there. (However, I do admit that I was to blame for the pine cone on head incident. See: incredulous groom face.) Additionally, we almost lost a bridesmaid in the wedding dress, but I’m *mostly* certain she made it out before the ceremony. If not, there’s a slight possibility Ryan left the day with two wives.
This one was hard to edit down; the day was laid back and bonkers fun all at the same time. Thanks, Mandy and Judah, for having me be a part of your special day that’s been in the making for some time now. So thrilled I got to document these two.
Some of my favorite work days have happened alongside the lovely Colleen of Color Me Rad Photography. Fortunately for me, Colleen gets hired for some beyond beautiful weddings and I’m lucky to be her trusty sidekick at a lot of these. Here are a few of my favorite shots from some more recent weddings.
It was so great getting the opportunity to shoot Chris and Monica’s wedding, who, did I mention, are both graphic designers? Pretty, pretty, pretty, everywhere. And of course there was that time where I made Preggers McGee run up and down the street with sparklers over and over again to get at least one long exposure shot at the end of the night. Enjoy!
If you were outside the confines of air conditioning in San Diego this last weekend, you’ll remember that our beloved 72º-and-sunny-year-round-city up and moved itself to Southern Florida. Regardless of the blessed heat and humidity wave, Shelby and Jeff braved the outdoors (and pre-7am start time!) and pulled this wedding off with panache. As always, PreggersMcGee ColorMeRad was a real trooper and helped make some beauteous images on what turned out to be the hottest weekend of the year . . . enjoy!
Kim and Vishal. I keep just wanting to follow that with the sentiment, “these two”, in a sort of knowing tone that a friend with an inside secret would use. We had our first meetup over Skype, which was fitting after hearing their story. Kim and Vishal met over a music website in the same way that some of my most cherished friends and I met over a photography website. I don’t know that this sort of thing happens any more, which is why I love it. Like Match.com before dating websites existed. This wedding was so fun to shoot, and you have to make sure you’ve seen the craziness of their photobooth pictures here. Thanks again to my trusty sidekick, Colleen, for helping me capture the day AND get all the fun film images from Kim’s Holga at the end of this post!
A few sneak peeks at the photobooth . . .
Uncork your finest champagne, dust off your piñatas, and put on your fancy pants! For the first three people to book the photobooth in 2013 [now accepting better names for “the photobooth”] I’m offering a 50% discount! 50% off you say? Yes, that’s HALF OFF, or 2 out of 4, or $500 off. Whether you’re booking a wedding, event, or simply want to set up an awesome photobooth in your garage [weird, but I’ll take it], the first three bookings will save $500 on a photobooth booking. Contact me for more information for your upcoming event!
I love second shooting for Colleen because it means I get to post animated GIFs of her steamy coffee glasses (seen below). And of course because I get to shoot lovely photos at the picturesque Condor’s Nest Ranch.
I originally had the opportunity to photograph Katie and Dave about a year and a half ago here, when I made them drink milkshakes and take pictures in public showers. Luckily we had so much fun they invited me back for the wedding! This was a perfect way to kick off 2013 weddings: One of the best beach towns in SoCal (check). Laid back couple in love (check). Baby blue Lincoln Continental (check). Local coffee shop venue (check). Oh, and that one time where I made the bride hike down treacherous dirt paths in really high heels to see her groom for the first time (check)! I really have to pinch myself sometimes when I realize how lucky I am to work with such amazing people. Again, major gratitude for Colleen of Color Me Rad (seen below, light testing in the bamboo) for helping me capture the day!
